Garry Grodberg, one of the most prominent Soviet and Russian organists of the 20 c., was born on 3 January 1929 to the Jewish father Yankel Grodberg and mother Rosa Grodberg (maiden name - Strazh) in Klaipėda, the former German city of Memel, since 1923 incorporated in Lithuania. Soon after the family of the 10 y.old Garry moved to Kaunas the beginning of the WW2 interrupted the normal order of things and made them re-locate once again to an obscure and small town of Namangan in Uzbekistan, this time as refugees of war.
