Father José Maurício Nunes Garcia (September 22, 1767 – April 18, 1830) was a Roman Catholic priest and one of several accomplished Afro-Brazilian composers during the Portuguese colonial period. He is considered one of the great composers of the Americas, being the author of a repertoire that stands, in quantity and quality, with those of the good European composers of his time.
